# 10 · Gym / fitness membership cancellation

**Why gyms get their own template:** many still require cancellation in person, by certified letter, or with 30 days' notice. Read your contract (or ask the front desk for a copy) and look for: notice period, cancellation method, annual fee date, and any freeze option.

**Before cancelling, ask yourself:** did I go at least 4 times last month? If not, the per-visit price is probably higher than a drop-in class. Cancel, or **freeze** if you'll really be back within a set date.

## A · Cancellation letter (send by email AND, if the contract requires it, by certified mail / recorded delivery)

> [YOUR NAME]
> [ADDRESS]
> [EMAIL] · [PHONE]
> Member number: [MEMBER NUMBER]
>
> [GYM NAME]
> [CLUB ADDRESS or HEAD OFFICE ADDRESS IN THE CONTRACT]
>
> [DATE]
>
> **Re: Notice of membership cancellation · member [MEMBER NUMBER]**
>
> Dear [GYM NAME],
>
> Please accept this letter as my formal notice to cancel my membership, effective [DATE / "at the end of the notice period required by my agreement"].
>
> Please stop all payments from my [CARD ending LAST 4 / bank account] after the final payment due under my agreement, and do not charge the annual fee due on [DATE, if applicable].
>
> Please send me written confirmation of the cancellation, the date and amount of any final payment, and confirmation that no further amounts will be collected.
>
> Sincerely,
> [SIGNATURE]
> [NAME]

**Keep:** a copy of the letter, the mailing receipt / tracking number, and the delivery confirmation.

## B · Say it at the front desk (if they insist on in-person)

> "Hi, I'd like to cancel my membership today. Member number [X]. Can you process it now and give me a printed or emailed confirmation with the final charge date?"

If they say a manager must do it: "Please note my request today, [DATE/TIME], and email me the confirmation. I'll send it in writing as well." Then send letter A the same day.

## C · Special situations (check your contract and local law)
- **Moved away:** many contracts let you cancel without a fee if you move more than a set distance from any club. Attach proof of the new address.
- **Medical reason:** many contracts allow cancellation or a freeze with a doctor's note.
- **Charged after cancelling:** template 06 with your confirmation attached.
- **US:** some states have health-club laws that set cancellation rights. Search "[your state] health club cancellation law" or ask your state attorney general's consumer office.
- **Italy ("disdetta palestra"):** check the "recesso" clause and send a PEC or raccomandata A/R. Template 20 has the Italian wording.
